Lews Castle Stornoway Print
£40.00 – £60.00
Description
Lews Castle in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides.
A Fine Art Giclée Print printed on Archival Hahnemühle Photo Rag. Shipped with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Built by Sir James Matheson in the 1850s, this grand country home has the dubious history of being built with money from the Chinese opium trade. That aside, Matheson purchased the island and began a programme of improvements including developing roads and drainage.
The castle was subsequently bought by Leverhulme and eventually gifted to the people of Stornoway in 1923. It has been restored to its former glory with a ballroom, accommodation on the upper floors, a cafe and museum extension celebrating the culture and people of the Islands.
