Ollochs*

The stone beach at Barvas takes your breath away when you get your first glimpse coming over the dunes off the grazings. It is so dense with beautifully rounded stones, not traditionally beautiful like the vast white sands of Luskentyre or Uig, more like a beach inviting you to search out its hidden treasures.

These mixed media works capture the gentle shapes and textures of the layered stones in their natural environment.

My first stone paintings were completed in 2021, I regularly return to them to explore their abstract shapes and textures. These painting seem at odds with my digital work, but in reality provide me the opportunity to work more loosely and expressively.

*There is some debate about the spelling of the word olloch, a term used to described the beautifully smooth, rounded stones found commonly on the beaches across the islands. An olloch is bigger than a pebble, it has substance and is notable for the time it has spent being smoothed by the tides.
